1/12/21 - Place-Based Education and Digital Environmental Education

• Leah Higgins, MiPINES Project
  • Partners in Nature Education Spaces has a tool for educators to find local nature spaces and outdoor classrooms, called MiPINES.  Leah will discuss the importance of recognizing "backyard" nature as well as a brief tutorial of MiPINES.
• Courtney Prout, Going the Distance with EE
  • Knowledge from scientific research tells us that nature can provide a sense of place and health benefits for mind and body.  Learn how For-Mar is helping reconnect older residents to nature by taking programming on the road.

2/9/21 - Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in EE

• Mike Reed, What is “Bugging” People of Color about the Outdoors
  • We will look at some techniques and skill sets that we can use to help audiences that are-non-traditional to the “great outdoors” feel that they belong and are comfortable being there.
• Chris Jackson & Garrett Dempsey, Detroit Outdoors
  • Rouge River is Detroit's largest park at 1,184 acres.  It contains beautiful sections of river and forest to explore.  Nestled with the park is Detroit's ONLY campground.  A program called Detroit Outdoors provides training, rental gear and programming for youth to have an overnight experience right in their own city.

3/9/21 - Sustainability

  • Want to make your school green? This session is for you! Emily will discuss a variety of topics from school gardens, curriculum mapping, funding, and getting the administration on board with sustainability programs in your school.
• Lauren Westerman, Getting Trashy with MAEOE: Using EE in Waste & Recycling
  • The 20/21 school year has been less than normal with virtual lessons, reaching children at home with EE and hybrid classrooms.  See how Kent County has adapted waste and recycling education programs to fit this new learning environment.

4/13/21 - A Bearable Evening in an Electric Election Year

  • If there is one graphic Americans have shared for the past several months, it has been the U.S. Map of the Electoral College. Can this map, originally designed to represent the relative human population of each state, also be used to teach the relative wildlife species/populations in each state? YES! All party affiliations welcome but be prepared to vote.
• Tori Reibel, Bear Behavior: Same Species, Different Doings
  • Besides their politics, do bears in northern United States differ from bears in the southern states? And if so, how? As the most widely distributed bear species in North America, explore the key differences that black bears (Ursus ameicanus) hold based on their geographic regions. The answers may surprise you.

  • Kids love to talk to each other, but how do you get them to talk about they're learning? Learn about teaching techniques you can use in any setting to help students get the most learning out of their daily conversations.

  • There can be many problems getting learners outdoors, but there are many solutions as well. Learn tips and tricks from an Early Childhood Educator.  She has first-hand knowledge of how to get learners of all abilities to enjoy nature play and education in the outdoors.
